I love the days when a Spanish word suddenly highlights a connection between the languages or expands my own understanding of English. For example entretener means to entertain. Translated literally, between to have. Entertaining implies captivation. The audience has to be riveted to have been entertained. It suddenly broadens my own understanding of the word entertain. It changes what I see when I say it in my head. I love that this is a side effect of my job.

P.S. The title is a reference to Gladiator. You probably already knew that. Right?
