I was walking home from Juanin’s after eating star fruit from her tree in the backyard and trying jaiba, or river crab, for the first time – delicious. She sent me home with two nephews, Carlito and Yoel, so that they could help me carry the plátanos and auyama she’d sent with me.

“Are you excited to start school again?”

“Look,” Yoel explained with a wave of his hand, “I don’t want to be a brute.” Carlito nodded, agreeing.

I love these people.
