Another thing about Kenzie: She had a dog. And this dog is so in love with her to this day, that she has now attached herself to me, the only other white person around. Even though this devotion is just a confused, misplaced love, I shamelessly take what I can get. Blackie goes everywhere with me. She curls up into a ball in the middle of the road waiting for me while I chat on the phone. She waits outside in the shade when I’m visiting someone. She follows me as I walk down long paths looking for gaps in barbed wire fences. She bathes in and drinks out of mud puddles and rivers. She always tries to come into our house, to my doña’s dismay. She makes me feel safe, and more importantly, liked.
